Our Mission
Giving animals a second chance
The Grace Animal Sanctuary works hard to give abused animals a second chance. Our rescue and rehabilitation programme focuses on restoring animals to optimal health — physically, emotionally and spiritually — before placing them in loving forever homes.
Our new farm location gives us the space to rescue and rehabilitate more animals than ever before. We are currently expanding our facilities and we need your support to make it happen.
Our Story
The Grace Animal Sanctuary works hard to give abused animals a second chance. Our rescue and rehabilitation programme focuses on restoring animals to optimal health — physically, emotionally and spiritually — before placing them in loving forever homes.
Founded on the belief that every animal deserves to be treated with dignity and care, Grace Animal Sanctuary has grown from a small passion project into a fully operational rescue and rehabilitation centre.
We work with a network of dedicated volunteers, fosters and donors who share our vision of a world where no animal suffers needlessly. Our new farm location gives us the space to rescue and rehabilitate more animals than ever before.
The people behind GRACE
Caron Burger - Founder
Meet Caron – Founder of Grace Animal Sanctuary
My journey in animal rescue began over 40 years ago when I was just 18 years old. What started as a personal passion became a lifelong calling. Over the decades, I have rescued and cared for horses, dogs, cats, and many other animals in need. For me, animal rescue has never simply been something I do—it is who I am.
For many years, I carried this responsibility on my own. As the number of animals needing help continued to grow, I realized that I could no longer do it alone. In March 2016, Grace Animal Sanctuary was officially established as a Non-Profit Organisation, allowing me to continue this work with greater structure and support.
The name “Grace” was chosen because I truly believe that everything we do is possible only through the Grace of God. My faith has carried me through both the joys and challenges of rescue work, and it remains the foundation of everything we stand for.
At Grace Animal Sanctuary, we are committed to operating with integrity, transparency, and compassion. We believe in full disclosure and maintain an open-door approach regarding our finances and our sanctuary. I take enormous pride in providing a happy, healthy, and loving environment where every animal receives the care and dignity they deserve.
As I approach my 60th year, I remain as dedicated as ever to this mission. While I continue to work to help support the sanctuary financially, much of the fundraising responsibility now rests solely on my shoulders, as many of the wonderful people who once assisted have moved on to other ventures.
Despite the challenges, I continue doing what I do best—caring for animals. Anyone who knows me knows that I am a nurturer by nature, and ensuring that our animals are well fed, our staff are supported, and our veterinary and operational expenses are met will always be my priority.
The sanctuary’s monthly running costs average between R50,000 and R75,000, depending largely on veterinary expenses. Like many families, my husband and I also face the everyday realities of maintaining our own home and caring for our own beloved pets while continuing to support the sanctuary.
Through every challenge and every victory, one thing has never changed: my unwavering commitment to giving animals a second chance at life. Rescue is not just my passion—it is my purpose, and I am deeply grateful to everyone who walks this journey alongside us.
